Summer is fast approaching and kids may have more time in their hands to have fun and enjoy. While some prefer fun and games, it might also be a good time to develop the habit of reading. This is especially true for new and early readers just about to explore and discover the wonderful world of books. Here is a suggested summer reading list for early readers.

A CatFish Tale by Kathy Brodsky

This is a funny story with a cat, a penguin and a fish as principal characters. It is a story about friendship, responsibility, and learning how to overcome challenges. The story is wonderfully told in rhyme accompanied by hand-painted illustrations. This book is ideal for readers from 2 to 8 years of age.

Now It is Summer by Eileen Spinelli

This story about a young mouse eagerly waiting for autumn to come and the fun the season brings is a must read for kids from 4 to 8 years old. It is a story to remind readers that they can be content in the here and now and be able to find happiness wherever they may be.

Miss Maple’s Seeds by Eliza Wheelermiss

This is a story about helping those who are lost to find their place. Miss Maple gathers lost seeds who have not yet found a home to bloom. She takes them on field trips to explore different places where they can blossom. The interesting story coupled with beautiful illustrations make this chapter book quite interesting for kids from 3 to 5 years old to read.

Henry and Mudge by Cynthia Rylant  

This book is quite ideal for early readers just trying to get around the habit of reading. Ideal for kids on the first grade, they will get attached to the lovable characters, Henry and his dog Mudge as they go on their many happy adventures. It is a chapter book that should be in every first reader’s lists.
